Quick answer
Yes, we buy your old geysers and air conditioners, paid by same-day EFT. When you upgrade to a modern gas, solar or inverter system, bring us the retired tank or unit. We weigh the steel, iron and copper on a verified weighbridge and pay you same-day EFT, helping offset the cost of your new installation.

Old geysers and air conditioners are worth real money as scrap, and most people never realise it. A dead geyser or a broken aircon is packed with copper, aluminium, brass and steel, and we buy those metals at our yard every day.
We are a direct scrap buyer, not a retailer. We do not sell new geysers, heat pumps or aircons. What we do is take your old, broken or replaced units off your hands, weigh the recoverable metal on a verified weighbridge, and settle by same-day EFT. This guide covers the geysers and aircons we buy, the metals inside them, how we grade and price a load, how to prep safely, and how selling to us works.
Quick Facts & Key Takeaways
- We buy old and scrap geysers and air conditioners for the copper, aluminium, brass and steel inside them, at rates that track the daily metal market.
- Copper is the top earner, especially the coils and pipework in aircons and heat pumps, which pay up to R177/kg for clean bright copper.
- We weigh everything on our own calibrated weighbridge in front of you and pay by same-day EFT once your ID and paperwork check out.
- Preparation matters: draining the geyser, safely disconnecting the unit and keeping the metals separate all move your load into a higher bracket.
- Under the Second-Hand Goods Act we buy directly from you and pay by bank transfer, never cash, so bring a valid ID and proof of address.
Why sell your old geysers and aircons to us?
When you upgrade to a gas, solar or inverter system, the old unit does not have to go to the tip. Bring it to us instead. There is no listing, no waiting for a resale and no haggling with strangers. We assess the metal in front of you, weigh it, and pay the same day.
Geysers and aircons are some of the most valuable household scrap you can bring in because so much of them is non-ferrous metal. A single split aircon holds several kilograms of recoverable copper in its coils and pipes. Homeowners clearing out after an upgrade, plumbers and HVAC installers stripping old jobs, and businesses replacing plant all sell these units to us, and recycling them keeps copper and aluminium out of landfill.
Geysers we buy
The metal inside a geyser decides its value. We buy all of the following at our yard:
- Electric geysers are mostly a steel outer tank with a copper or copper-alloy element and internal fittings. The steel casing sits in the lower ferrous band, while the element and any copper pipework lift the payout. You can sell the steel and iron from the tank on the same weighbridge ticket.
- Gas geysers carry more copper in their heat exchanger and internal pipework, so they usually pay better per unit than an electric tank of the same size.
- Solar geyser tanks and heat-pump water heaters contain a mix of copper, aluminium and steel. Heat-pump units in particular hold copper coils similar to an aircon, which are the highest-value part.
Whatever the type, we take it whole or stripped. If you have already pulled the copper element or pipes, keep them separate so we grade them at the copper rate rather than blending them into the steel.
Air conditioners we buy
Air conditioners are copper-rich, which makes them worth prepping properly before you sell. We buy:
- Split-system aircons (indoor and outdoor units) built around copper coils, copper connecting pipes, an aluminium-finned condenser and a steel casing. The compressor also holds copper windings inside a heavy steel shell.
- Window and wall units with the same copper-and-aluminium coil pack in a steel box.
- Commercial, ducted and chiller units and heat pumps from offices, cold rooms and factories, which carry the most copper and aluminium of all.
Those replaced units are full of copper, so you can sell your copper to us at strong rates, and the compressor is effectively a sealed electric motor we buy at a blended rate. Keep the unit intact unless you are trained to recover refrigerant safely.
How we grade and price the metals
Every load is priced on three things: the metal type, the weight, and how clean and sorted it is. Rates move daily with the metal market, so always ask us for today's figure or check our current scrap metal prices before you come in. As a guide, the per-kilogram bands look like this:
- Copper coils, pipework and clean wire: copper is the top earner at up to R177 per kg for clean bright copper, with mixed and tarnished copper lower by grade.
- Aluminium condenser fins, casings and heat-exchanger parts: roughly R5 to R45 per kg depending on grade and how clean the aluminium is. You can sell your aluminium separated where possible.
- Brass fittings, valves and unions: roughly R25 to R75 per kg, with cleaner red brass at the top of that band. See our brass and bronze rates for detail.
- Steel geyser tanks and aircon casings: ferrous heavy steel is around R2.50 to R4.00 per kg, so the outer shell adds weight but sits in the lower band.
Whole units are weighed and priced on their mixed metal content, so the more you separate the copper and aluminium out beforehand, the higher your effective rate.
How to prep for the best payout
A little safe preparation separates a top-bracket load from a downgraded one:
- Drain the geyser fully and let it air-dry. We cannot weigh in water, and a full tank is heavy and awkward to handle.
- Disconnect safely. Isolate the electricity and, for gas geysers, close and disconnect the gas supply first. Only a qualified person should disconnect fixed wiring or gas.
- Do not vent refrigerant. For aircons, leave the sealed system intact unless a licensed technician has recovered the gas. We assess the copper, aluminium and steel when the unit is processed at our yard.
- Separate the metals where you safely can, keeping copper coils and pipes apart from the aluminium fins and the steel casing so each is graded at its own rate.
- Keep loose fittings together and out of the general rubbish, so nothing valuable is lost and the load is quick to assess.
How selling to us works
The process is quick and transparent:
- Ask for today's rate. Send us your item types and rough weights and we will quote the current price before you commit.
- Bring it in or book a collection. Deliver to our yard at, or, for a large load, ask us to collect and the surrounding.
- We weigh on a verified weighbridge. You see the weight and the grade, so the offer is clear and verifiable.
- Bring your paperwork. The Second-Hand Goods Act requires a valid ID and proof of address for every transaction.
- Get paid by same-day EFT. Once the load is weighed and the paperwork is in order, we settle straight to your bank account, never cash.
You can also sell your other scrap metal to us on the same visit.
Frequently asked questions
Can I sell my old geyser or air conditioner to you?
Yes. We buy old and scrap geysers, air conditioners and heat pumps for the copper, aluminium, brass and steel inside them. We assess the metal, weigh it on our weighbridge, and pay by same-day EFT.
What details should I send before selling?
Send photos, the item type, rough size or weight, your area, and whether the unit is already disconnected. This helps us confirm the best drop-off or collection option and quote a rate.
Should I strip the copper before selling an air conditioner?
Usually no. Keep the unit intact unless you are trained to recover refrigerant safely. We assess the copper, aluminium and steel when we process the unit, and separated copper is graded at the copper rate either way.
How do I get the best payout?
Drain the water, disconnect safely, keep loose fittings together, avoid mixing the load with rubbish, and ask us for the current rate before you sell. Cleaner, sorted loads sit in a higher price bracket and are faster to assess.
